The office effect: The art of creating a productive work environment

Opinions about working from home aside, the fact remains – the office is still a vital space for many businesses. As more people return to offices post-COVID, the debate around what makes the ideal work environment is more relevant than ever.

A well-designed office actively shapes productivity, creativity and satisfaction. In fact, recent stats show that 73% of UK office workers would consider leaving their current role if their workspace wasn’t up to scratch, highlighting the importance of a thoughtful environment. Just as a website’s UX affects user engagement, the office environment impacts employee output, creativity and morale.

We’ve applied branded décor of all shapes, sizes and materials to transform diverse spaces, inspire and encourage interaction – from a multi-floor London HQ for a global insurer to an independent soft play and nursery, and, of course, our very own office. Office branding isn’t just decorative touches—it’s a powerful tool for communication and connection.

What makes a good workplace environment, then? Here’s our top tips. . .

  1. Prioritise the human element

Last time we checked, employees tend to be humans, and a fundamental need for humans to be at their best is to be in a space where they feel both relaxed and motivated. Therefore, a healthy workspace starts with the basics – physical and mental comfort. Ergonomic equipment, comfortable seating, excellent lighting, as much daylight as possible, and spaces that reduce noise distractions are crucial. This all helps to minimise stress and maintain focus.

  2. Make a brand statement with unique visuals and installations

Your workspace should reflect your brand’s identity, and creative installations are an effective way to do that. In our office, we’ve just put up fun installations inspired by the theme of communication —the very core of marketing. From a HUGE Scrabble board with PR-themed words to a deep-sea diver holding a message in a bottle, expressive faces cast from our own team to a department-themed tube map, and PMW-branded hot air balloons to a hanging biplane (complete with a message on its tail), each sets the tone, instantly communicating our brand’s energy and creative spirit. On our walls, we also have supersized decals of well-known quotes tailored to each room’s purpose, and quirky 3D signage for every department.

Unique visual pieces spark conversations, engage visitors with a wow factor lasting impression, and help to tell a brand’s story.

  3. Using the right materials to elevate your space

Of course, it’s not just about the designs themselves—it’s about how you bring them to life. The materials you choose can make all the difference in creating an atmosphere that aligns with your brand. We carefully select a range of textures and finishes, like raised acrylics and printed vinyl artwork, to give spaces depth and visual interest. Fret-cut metalwork and wooden elements form a tactile dimension, while the LED illuminations highlight key areas and create a welcoming glow. These materials not only enhance the look and feel of the office but reinforce the vibe you want to project, making your workspace as unique as your brand.

  4. Use colour and scent to set a mood

Colour can impact focus, energy and mood. Make sure you pick the colours that evoke the right response when considering the area you’re decorating. For example:

    – Yellow brings energy and optimism to collaborative zones.
    – Red, used sparingly, adds motivation in dynamic areas.
    – Blue promotes calm and focus in quiet workspaces.
    – Green, alongside plants, reduces stress and supports concentration.
    – Lavender aids communication and mental clarity in teamwork zones.
    – White enhances balance and spatial harmony. If painting isn’t possible, adding colour with wall decals, vinyl, hanging artwork, or furniture decor can still achieve benefits.

Just as colour influences mood, scent has a powerful impact on the atmosphere of a space. When you step through our doors, you’ll be greeted with the same fragrance found at Disney’s theme parks, creating a sense of familiarity and fun. In our boardroom, we’ve chosen warming woody notes, which contribute to a calm and inviting atmosphere. These carefully selected fragrances tap into the emotional power of scent to create a memorable and inspiring environment.

  5. Create zones for both collaboration and focus

Consider that different tasks require different environments for maximum productivity. Think about standing desks for collaborative work and private partitioned areas for focused meetings. We find that our beanbags are great for productive thinking time, while our bleacher-style seating area doubles as space-saving presentation seating (and an occasional movie night spot). Meanwhile, our ping-pong table gives the team a fun way to unwind. This diversity allows everyone to find the right space for the task at hand.

With the right touches, your workspace can be a natural extension of your brand and culture. When it comes to designing your own space, remember that thoughtful choices make a real difference to your team’s comfort, creativity and productivity. And if you’d like to see how it all comes together, stop by for a coffee sometime—we’d love to show you around and explore some fresh ideas for your space.
